Forget the DOT + something else useful

For years I've been telling people my email is oskari "dot" rautiainen@gmail.com. I figured with a name as confusing as mine it was worth the effort to emphasize the dot.

WELL turns out I'm still stuck in the stone ages of using Hotmail (yeah, I used to have a Hotmail account). Apparently no one bothered to tell me that the "dot" doesn't matter. I had to read an article from the Business Insider this morning to find out: http://www.businessinsider.com/stop-telling-people-theres-a-dot-in-your-gmail-address--it-doesnt-matter-2013-8

Mind = Blown.

But I'm sure I'm not the last one to realize this just now.

I learned something very useful from this. I can annoy the heck out of people I don't like (and online subscriptions!) by doing stuff like o..s...k...ar...i.....ra....ut..i..a..i...n.e...n...@gmail.com. You have to enjoy the little victories in life. I can only imagine trying to log into Facebook with that.

The article also points out that gmail allows you to add a "+" to the end of your normal address, followed by whatever you want. For example, I can tell the next online account I create and don't care to get updates from that my email is oskarirautiainen+spam@gmail.com. Sure if someone on their end looks at it they probably won't be too happy, but when I get an email from them I can have it automatically placed into my spam label using filters.

Pretty convenient.

I can also start sending my own reminders to oskarirautiainen+todo@gmail.com and create a filter to automatically place them in my ToDo label.
